COVID-19 Cases Rising In India Highlights: India is once again witnessing an unsettling rise in COVID-19 cases, with the number of active infections climbing to 7,121; according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's latest update as of 12:00 AM IST, June 11, 2025.

Leading the current spike is Kerala, with 96 fresh infections, pushing its active caseload to 2,223; a majority of the country’s total. Meanwhile, the national capital Delhi recorded 66 new infections, taking its active cases to 757.

Gujarat is also seeing a major spike in active Covid cases, with 114 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections recorded to 1,223.

Despite the emergence of new subvariants, the JN.1 strain remains the most dominant, accounting for a staggering 53% of all positive cases across the country. With the virus subtly shifting form and symptoms evolving, health authorities are urging the public to maintain precautionary measures, including hygiene, mask use in crowded places, and timely testing. Although hospitalisation remains low, experts warn that complacency could reverse progress.

Stay informed, and if you’re experiencing mild symptoms like fatigue, a sore throat, or gastrointestinal discomfort, it’s best to test early and isolate to prevent further spread.

COVID-19 in India LIVE: Study Finds Covid-19 Virus Can Cause Immune System To Attack Healthy Cells

Amid a fresh wave of Covid-19, Israeli researchers have discovered that a protein from the SARS-CoV-2 virus can cause the immune system to attack healthy cells mistakenly.

The study, published in the journal Cell Reports, sheds light on how severe Covid complications may occur and suggests new ways to prevent immune-driven damage from the virus, Xinhua news agency reported.

Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that the virus's nucleocapsid protein (NP), which normally helps package the virus's genetic material inside infected cells, can spread to nearby uninfected epithelial cells.

Once on the surface of these healthy cells, NP would be mistakenly identified by the immune system as a threat. The immune system then deploys anti-NP antibodies, which mark these uninfected cells for destruction.

The process triggers the classical complement pathway, a part of the immune response that leads to inflammation and tissue damage, contributing to severe Covid symptoms and possibly long Covid.

COVID-19 in India LIVE: How Can Office Goers Protect Themselves From COVID-19?

People who go to work daily, especially via public transport and in crowded office spaces, are more vulnerable to these emerging variants. So, what can you do to stay safe if you're an office goer? Here's everything you need to keep in mind.

While most people received their primary COVID-19 vaccinations during the pandemic, it’s important not to become complacent. If you haven't taken the vaccine for any reason, consult your doctor and get vaccinated. For those in high-risk groups—like the elderly, people with low immunity, or chronic illnesses—booster doses may be necessary. With new variants like COVID NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 in circulation, staying updated with your vaccines provides crucial protection.

    Social Distancing Still Works

The virus spreads more easily in close-contact environments. Maintain at least one metre of distance from others whenever possible. Avoid crowded areas, especially during peak hours in public transport or crowded office cafeterias. Social distancing remains one of the most effective tools in preventing virus transmission, even in this post-pandemic phase.

COVID-19 Cases Rising in India LIVE: What Are Symptoms Of The New COVID Variant?

The two distinct symptoms of this variant as compared to previous variants are:

    A. Gastrointestinal Issues

A distinguishing symptom of JN.1 is the heightened occurrence of digestive problems, including nausea, decreased appetite, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea. Although gastrointestinal symptoms were observed in previous COVID-19 variants, they were generally less frequent and often mild. In the case of JN.1, these symptoms appear to be more pronounced and impact a greater number of patients. Medical professionals suggest that this shift may be attributed to the virus's modified behavior within the body or its interaction with the immune system of the gut.

    B. Persistent Low-Grade Fever

In contrast to previous variants where high fever accompanied by sweating and chills was prevalent, JN.1 infections frequently result in a persistent low-grade fever, generally. Individuals may feel slightly warm for several days without experiencing the severe fever spikes that were characteristic of earlier COVID waves. This symptom can easily be overlooked or confused with mild fatigue or other minor ailments.

    1. Experiencing ongoing fatigue, stomach issues, or mild fever? It’s best not to brush it off. Instead:

    2. Get tested for COVID-19, especially if you've had recent travel or social exposure.

    3. Isolate yourself immediately to protect those around you.

    4. Stay hydrated and get plenty of rest to support your immune system.

COVID-19 Cases Rising in India LIVE: 2223 Active Cases In Kerala, Is The Govt Prepared?

Kerala, which was one of the states to report a spike in Covid-19 infections, has registered 170 new cases.

Amid an increase in Covid-19 cases, Kerala Health Minister Veena George has said that special care should be taken as the disease remains more severe among the elderly and those with other diseases.

She added that the Omicron JN.1 variants LF.7 and XFG were the most common in Kerala. These variants are "not as severe" but have a high potential for spreading the disease.

“Masks should be worn in public places and during travel. Genomic sequencing is being conducted to identify the Covid-19 variant. The Omicron JN.1 variant LF.7 and XFG, which are spreading in Southeast Asian countries, are the most common in Kerala. Although these variants are not as severe, they have a high potential for spreading the disease,” the minister said.

"There are currently 2,223 active Covid cases in the state. 96 people are under treatment. Most of them have other diseases. 431 cases have been reported in Ernakulam district, 426 cases in Kottayam and 365 cases in Thiruvananthapuram," the ministry said.

COVID-19 in India LIVE: What Is the JN.1 Variant of COVID-19?

JN.1 is a sub-variant of Omicron and carries an additional mutation in the spike protein, which helps the virus attach to human cells. This mutation could increase its transmissibility or allow it to partially escape immunity developed through past infection or vaccination.

Despite the mutation, most JN.1 cases have presented with mild symptoms, and the variant is currently listed as a "variant under monitoring" by the World Health Organization (WHO).
