An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, flying as flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed just after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 PM IST on Thursday. 242 individuals, 230 passengers and 12 crew members, were present on the flight. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also present on the flight.

The accident took place in the highly populated Meghani Nagar locality close to the airport, with images indicating dense black smoke billowing from the crash site. The plane, bearing the registration number VT-ANB, was flown by Commander Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of experience, and First Officer Clive Kundar with 1,100 hours. As per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the copilot made a mayday call to Air Traffic Control (ATC) after taking off from runway 23, but no second response was received. The aircraft went out of the airport boundary soon after.

Emergency teams, including seven fire engines, were deployed to the incident site. The accident was confirmed by Air India through a statement on X: "Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. We are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest."

Flightradar24 information suggests that the plane had previously flown from Delhi to Ahmedabad on the same day. The DGCA is probing the reason behind the crash and rescue efforts are ongoing. More information is awaited.
