COVID 19 in India LIVE: As the world begins to breathe easier post-pandemic, a fresh reminder of COVID-19’s lingering presence has emerged. India is witnessing a gradual uptick in coronavirus cases once again, reporting 257 active cases nationwide as of May 19, 2025, according to official government data. The spike, although not alarming yet, comes at a time when Singapore and Hong Kong are battling fresh COVID-19 waves driven by new Omicron subvariants like JN.1.

Kerala leads with 69 cases, followed by Maharashtra (44) and Tamil Nadu (34). Other states, including Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim, have also reported fresh infections. Mumbai’s KEM Hospital has confirmed two COVID-related deaths, prompting localised concern.

Health officials, including representatives from ICMR and NCDC, emphasised that India's overall situation remains under control, with no indication of a large-scale resurgence. Enhanced surveillance, early detection, and response mechanisms are in place.

Meanwhile, Singapore has seen a 28% rise in weekly cases, and Hong Kong reported 31 COVID-related deaths, marking its highest in a year. Experts caution against complacency, urging Indians to follow safety protocols, especially in high-risk areas.

Though the current numbers are low, continued monitoring, vaccination, and hygiene practices are key to preventing another wave. Stay alert—not alarmed, say health authorities.

Covid-19 Cases LIVE: Akhliesh Yadav Urges Yogi Govt To Act Swiftly

In a recent tweet, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed concerns about the government's preparedness to tackle the recent spur in COVID cases. He emphasised the need for the government to be proactive and take timely measures to prevent another health crisis.

"Before the alarm bell rings, the government must be alert in time to control and prevent Corona, so that the mistakes of carelessness and mismanagement like last time are not repeated again. BJP's mistakes often prove to be fatal for the people. Now even that vaccine for Corona, whose certificates were distributed in large numbers, has proved to be unsuccessful. That is why this time there is a need for even more vigilance. We all have to explain to the public that although the situation of Corona is not very serious right now, still it should not be neglected because such diseases come in a changed form, so the government should make good use of its health-medical and information system and should not let the fear of Corona spread among the public,' he posted on X.

India has also reported a mild rise in active COVID cases. According to data available up to May 19, there are currently 257 active COVID-19 cases in the country.

Earlier on Monday, following recent media reports of a surge in COVID cases in Singapore and Hong Kong, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) convened a review meeting with experts from National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) division, Disaster Management Cell, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and central government hospitals.

Covid-19 Cases LIVE: Prashant Kishor Targets Bihar's Health Minister

Jan Suraj Party founder Prashant Kishor launched a scathing attack against Bihar's political leadership, criticising Health Minister Mangal Pandey and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over misgovernance and neglect of farmers' issues.

Speaking to the media after addressing a public gathering, Kishor questioned Mangal Pandey's role during the COVID-19 crisis. "Mangal Pandey was the Health Minister during Covid. Lakhs of people returned to Bihar on foot... Don't forget what hardships you and your family had to go through," he said, invoking painful memories of the migrant crisis during the pandemic in 2020.

Kishor also lashed out at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's long tenure, saying his government had failed to ensure fair prices for farmers despite being in power for two decades. "Nitish Kumar has been the Chief Minister for 20 years... Paddy was sold at Rs 1500 to Rs 1900 per quintal, and now the government is about to go in the next four months, so they are talking about Rabi and Kharif. People want the right price for grains," he remarked.
