Through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) will launch a ground-breaking new system for Provident Fund (PF) withdrawals. By the end of May or early June of this year, PF members will be able to withdraw funds via UPI and ATM. An automated system will enable PF members to make immediate withdrawals of up to Rs 1 lakh.
The recommendation of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an umbrella organisation that operates retail payments and settlement systems in India, has been approved by the Labour and Employment Ministry.
How Much PF Money Can You withdraw via UPI, ATM from May End Or June?
Speaking with ANI, Sumita Dawra, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, said that by the end of May or June this year, PF members will be able to withdraw funds via UPI and ATM. Dawra said that by May-end or June, members' access to their provident funds would undergo a radical transformation. Members will be able to view their PF account balance directly on UPI, instantly withdraw up to Rs 1 lakh through an automated system, and select their preferred bank account for transfers, she said.
PF Withdrawal options expanded
According to Dawra, the organization has greatly increased the number of withdrawal options available to give people greater financial flexibility. Besides the current sickness benefits, members can now take out money for housing, education, and marriage.
"The EPFO has made significant strides in digitalizing its processes, integrating over 120 databases to streamline the withdrawal process. Claim processing time has been dramatically reduced to just 3 days, with 95% of claims now automated and plans to further simplify the process underway," Dawra said.
According to Dawra, recent measures have also helped pensioners. With the option to withdraw money from any bank branch, 78 lakh pensioners have had more freedom since December. The geographical limitations for pension withdrawals, which were restricted to a few selected bank branches, have been lifted entirely.
PM Modi's vision of "ease of living" for employees and employers
According to Dawra, working on these reforms was challenging. The EPFO's massive scale is evident in its membership numbers. With over 7.5 crore active members, the organization is expanding, adding 10–12 lakh new members each month across its 147 regional offices nationwide.
Secretary Dawra said these reforms are in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "ease of living" for employees and employers. The initiative aims to streamline social security processes, update IT infrastructure, and provide India's workforce greater financial convenience. The upcoming introduction of UPI and ATM-based PF withdrawals will be a major turning point in India's digital financial transformation, offering millions of working professionals unprecedented ease and speed.
