With advancements in the field of biometric technology, India has topped globally in adoption of biometrics techniques, says a report.

Government has so far spent Rs 5,630 crore on UID project and generated as many as 78.65 crore Aadhaar numbers under the scheme, Parliament was informed Friday.

Under its flagship National Health Assurance Mission (NHAM) which will be launched shortly, government has planned to cover the entire population.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reviewed progress of Aadhaar project and is believed to have discussed the possibility of using the platform to resume Aadhaar-based direct benefit transfers of subsidised schemes.

Government is not considering any proposal to discontinue the Aadhaar project under which biometrics details of residents are collected to generate unique identification number, Parliament was informed Friday.
