Deeply saddened by the death of Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi last week, the US today said he was one of the world's great humanitarians who dedicated his life to serving others regardless of religion, class, nationality or ethnicity.

Celebrated Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, founder of the non-profit Edhi Foundation that provided succour to millions of poor and destitute over the years, has died at a hospital in Karachi. He was 88.

Sharif`s government had offered to fly Edhi abroad for treatment, but he refused, saying he wanted to be treated at a public hospital in his own country.
