The state government's petition, filed on Tuesday, demands the removal of adverse comments directed at its conduct concerning the premature release of 11 convicts involved in the Bilkis Bano case. These remarks, it contends, have unfairly tainted its reputation.

Bilkis Bano, who was gang-raped and seven members of her family slaughtered during the 2002 Gujarat riots, has challenged the pre-mature release of 11 rape convicts by the BJP-led Gujarat government.
A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Mumbai on January 21, 2008, sentenced the eleven accused to life imprisonment on the charge of gang rape and murder of seven members of Bilkis Bano's family.

Gujarat government on Monday defended in Supreme Court its decision to release the 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang-rape case in accordance with the 1992 remission policy since they had completed more than 14 years in prison and their conduct was found to be good.
"The remission (given to 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang rape case) was not granted under the circular governing grant of remission to prisoners as per the celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav," Gujarat government told Supreme Court.
11 men convicted in the 2002 case of Bilkis Bano's gang-rape during the Gujarat riots walked out free from the Godhra sub-jail last month after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy.
Chidambaram said Narottam Mishra, who is known for his controversial statements, should become the Union home minister since he has information which even the ministry of home affairs did not have.
"The case is..this Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar and Naseruddin Shah are sleeper cells of the tukde tukde gang..." Narottam Mishra said.
