A group that monitors extremists' online activity says al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb has said it killed a Malian officer outside his Timbuktu home.

Gunmen on Monday attacked a hotel in Mali`s capital Bamako that had been converted into a base for a European Union military training mission in the West African nation, a Defence Ministry official and a witness said.

Two soldiers and a guard have been killed in two separate attacks in Mali, government and army sources confirmed.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) released a video on Monday showing three men purportedly confessing to spying for the Mauritanian and French military and then one being taken out of a pick-up truck in the desert and shot in the head.
