NASA's Mars Curiosity rover has achieved a new milestone as it completes 2,000 days on the Martian surface.
Curiosity landed near Mount Sharp in Gale Crater in August 2012. It reached the base of the mountain in 2014. Layers of rocks at the base of Mount Sharp accumulated as sediment within ancient lakes around 3.5 billion years ago.
The test uses a liquid-based technique known as capillary electrophoresis to separate a mixture of organic molecules into its components.
NASA will present new findings on a wide range of Earth and space science topics at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union which is being held from December 12-16 in San Francisco.
No active dunes have been visited anywhere in the solar system besides Earth.
