Massive protests broke out in Assam on Tuesday against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as the 11-hour North East bandh called by North East Students' Organisation (NESO) kicked off.
Massive protests broke out in several parts of Assam against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019 which was passed in Lok Sabha on Monday and It is feared that the protests could spill over to other parts of North East too as North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has called for an 11-hour bandh in North East.
All educational institutes and public facilities including in Imphal city wore a deserted look. Buses, trucks and other commercial vehicles went off the roads. Shops and businesses were shut.
The bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act 1955 to grant Indian citizenship to people from minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan after six years of residence in India instead of 12 even if they don't possess any proper document.
