Twitter shares nose-dived today after the Financial Times reported a top suitor walked away, making it likely the one-to-many messaging service will be left to fly solo.

Twitter Inc Chief Executive Jack Dorsey defined one of the company`s missions as being the "people`s news network," according to an internal memo seen on Monday.

Established players in the industry are all looking to boost Internet-based delivery of their business software products to fend off competition from pure cloud-based rivals, a market Salesforce pioneered and where it remains category leader.

SAP Chief Executive Bill McDermott said his company has "zero interest" in acquiring software rival Salesforce.com, which is rumoured to be for sale.

"There is no truth whatsoever to the suggestion SAP is considering or ever did consider acquiring Salesforce.com," said an SAP spokesperson in an e-mailed statement.

Business software maker SAP SE will cut about 2,250 posts, or around 3 percent of its global workforce, while creating a similar number in expanding parts of the company, as it accelerates a push to sell its products via the Internet.
