Scorpene class submarine News
Karanj, the third Scorpene class submarine constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited for the Indian Navy, was launched on Wednesday. Along with traditional ceremonies, Sanskrit shlokas were recited from the Atharva Veda at the launch.
Karanj will now undergo rigorous trials and tests, both in harbour and at sea before it is commissioned into the Navy.
The technology utilised in the Scorpene has ensured superior stealth features and has gone through 120 days of extensive sea trials.
Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Submarines), Mohit Gupta said that the Indian Navy is also planning to induct two scorpene class submarines this year.
Terming the leak of documents relating to India's Scorpene submarines as a "serious matter", French defence major DCNS on Wednesday said the issue is being thoroughly investigated by the French national authorities for defence security.
The Indian Navy said on Wednesday the leaked documents on the Scorpene submarine not impact its stealth and operational capabilities as the details are "old" and that the vessel`s "signature" will be known only once it heads for the open sea.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said documents relating to the French Scorpene submarine being built in the country appeared to have been hacked.
