Urban Development Ministry has announced the names of 98 cities which would be developed into smart cities having core infrastructure needed to enhance urban living.
Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said that financial support to states and urban local bodies committed by the Centre was Rs three lakh crore over the next five to six years under JnNURM as compared to Rs 36,000 crore during 2005-14.
Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday said that a 'Smart City' is what the citizens want their places to be and the city-level plans should be evolved based on extensive consultations with them.
"A large number of our youth especially those in the 15-20 age group are digitally savvy. These are the people who never go to a railway station or a bus terminal or a cinema all to book a ticket but through their smartphones...Thus, smart cities will need an ideal environment to meet the expectation of the internet savvy youth," Ramadorai said.
