Pic courtesy: ANI New Delhi: VK Sasikala was on Tuesday convicted in a corruption case by Supreme Court which dashed her ambition to become the Tamil Nadu CM, as the verdict holding her guilty of entering into a conspiracy with late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa would bar her from electoral politics for the next decade.
The apex court judgement, delivered at a time when the state is witnessing a bitter power struggle in the aftermath of Jayalalithaa's demise, set aside the Karnataka High Court order acquitting all the four accused and "restored in toto" the trial court's decision in the 19-year-old disproportionate assets case.
60-year-old Sasikala will now have to serve a jail term of around three-and-half years out of four years awarded by the trial court as she has already undergone almost six months in prison.

A unit of the Tamil Nadu Police with senior officials enter Golden Bay Resort in Koovathur, where Sasikala has been staying since last night.

As per the SC order, Sasikala will serve a jail sentence of three years and six months as she has already served almost six months in jail.
After being convicted in disproportionate assets by the Supreme Court, VK Sasikala cannot contest elections for the next six years.

The SC restores in toto the conviction and sentence awarded by the trial court in Bengaluru to all the accused.
The SC, however, abates the appeal proceedings against J Jayalalithaa owing to her death on December 5 last.
The two-judge bench comprising Justices PC Ghose and Amitava Roy directs Sasikala and her two relatives - VN Sudhakaran and Elavarasi - to surrender forthwith to the trial court in Bengaluru and serve the remaining part of four-year jail term.

GS Mani, the lawyer for Satta Panchayat Iyakkam, says if the court convicts Sasikala, she will lose everything. "If the court convicts Sasikala even for a minimum period of one year, she will legally lose the Chief Minister post because she will suffer the disqualification as per the provision under the Constitution and per the law laid by the Supreme Court. As she is not the member of the legislative assembly, she does not fulfill the qualification. There is no doubt if the court convicts her she will lose everything," says Mani.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy expresses confidence that the Supreme Court would convict AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala in disproportionate assets case. "This case got initiated after I submitted the documents to the Supreme Court. We have argued about the case in detail as we have fought at every level. I expect we would emerge victorious. We have to see on which basis she will get conviction. I know the case very well and expect that she will be convicted," says Swamy.

Tight security arrangement is in place outside Poes Garden too.
Security has been deployed outside Golden Bay Resort as a precaution in the wake of today's judgement in DA case. Notably, Sasikala has been staying at the resort, where lawmakers of the ruling AIADMK are being housed, since last night.
The Bengaluru trial court had, however, convicted the four on September 27, 2014. The court had sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years in jail and imposed a Rs 100 crore fine in the disproportionate assets case. The trial had lasted for 18 years.
The bench of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Amitava Roy would pronounce the verdict, that was reserved on June 7, 2016, at around 10:30 am.
The Karnataka government had challenged the May 11, 2015, state High Court verdict acquitting Jayalalithaa, Sasikala and her two relatives - VN Sudhakaran and Elavarasi - for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 66.65 crore during her first term as Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996.
The Supreme Court will pronounce on Tuesday its verdict on the Karnataka government's plea challenging the acquittal of late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, her close aide VK Sasikala and two others in a disproportionate assets case.
