PM Narendra Modi while addressing an election rally in Meghalaya said "The people of the country will give a befitting reply to the people having such offensive thinking and language."

The Meghalaya sports department denied the permission for PM Narendra Modi's election rally at the PA Sangma Sports Complex in Tura citing safety concerns due to ongoing construction.

The NPP won 19 seats in the last elections and formed the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) with the HSDP, UDP, PDF and BJP. Its main contender in the state is the former CM Mukul Sangma-led TMC. Sangma along with 11 other MLAs of the Congress switched sides to join the TMC last year.

In a resignation letter to Congress president Malikarjun Kharge, Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the party has lost its "sense of direction".

While Ferlin Sangma and Benedic Marak were from the ruling NPP, HM Shangpliang was of the opposition TMC.
