Strong demand for 4G devices in emerging markets like India, helped smartphone sales grow 6.7 percent to 366.2 million units in April-June 2017 as compared to year-ago period, as per data from research firm Gartner.
With content and video consumption set to grow with 4G, over 18.2 million 4G devices were shipped in the second quarter of 2016 as against 15.4 million in the first quarter this year, market research firm CyberMedia Research (CMR) said on Friday.
The market for 4G devices in India is becoming increasingly affordable and there are around 15 phone models which are available at a price point of Rs 5,000 or lower, a report by Kotak Institutional Equities said.
Mobile handset maker Samsung India Tuesday said 4G phones will drive the smartphone market in the country on the back of increasing data speed.
The two companies, whose share of smartphone sales in India covers more than half of the share, will now focus on devices that support 3G/4G networks.
