In a worrying trend, some social media users have started posting fake Aadhaar cards featuring their own photos—created using ChatGPT’s new image generation tool. 

The West Bengal Chief Minister announced on Monday that her government would provide alternative identification cards to people whose Aadhaar cards have been “deactivated” by the Centre.

Officials were acting on the instructions of BJP leaders during the recent Uttar Pradesh urban local body elections, alleged Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav.

Over the years, the Aadhaar card has evolved as a primary identification document for a number of purposes in India. The Aadhaar-based authentication services have been used almost 37,000 crore times since inception. As per UIDAI records, about three crore authentication requests are received on an average every day.

Dr Pandey said that the PML Rules amendment makes opening bank account easier for individuals who are living in an address different from their address in Aadhaar.
