 Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was addressing a rally when the powerful blast took place.

After the explosion the state broadcaster quickly cut away from coverage of the rally, which broke up with people singing, chanting and going back to their homes.  

Regional officials in Ethiopia say 11 people were killed in clashes in the restive Oromia region as the country continues to experience anti- government protests that at times lead to ethnic violence.

Demonstrations began popping up in November 2015 in the Oromia region due to a government plan to expand the boundaries of Addis Ababa.
