UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says the single-game knockout format, used in the CL this year from the quarter-final onwards,will be considered in the future. Ceferin highlighted that the new format, implemented owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, has produced more exciting football. Eight clubs headed to Lisbon to complete the Champions League this season under a new single-legged format, behind closed doors.

In an open letter to the UEFA president, the fans pointed out that the ban was 'absurd' as many supporters stood anyway regardless of whether they are allowed to or not. 

The Slovenian, who was standing unopposed for re-election later on Thursday, told Congress that the danger of a Super League had been removed following "honest, direct and uncompromising" discussions between UEFA and the clubs.

 FIFA President Gianni Infantino has not had any second thoughts about using video assistant referees (VAR) at this year`s World Cup, he told Reuters on Monday, despite recent controversies involving the new technology.

Club bosses are set to vote this week on a proposal to close the window early, a move that would leave it out of line with the standard FIFA dates.

Ceferin highlighted the credibility challenges facing scandal-tainted football, along with regular accusations of match-fixing and doping.

UEFA on Wednesday elects a new president after the banning of Michel Platini with Slovenian football leader Aleksander Ceferin the favourite to take on the task of easing tensions with Europe`s leading clubs.

The election, which will be held in Athens, has been called after former president Michel Platini was banned last October as FIFA`s ethics committee investigated allegations of unethical conduct.

UEFA rearranged the group-stage slots in favour of its four top-ranked leagues - in effect Spain, England, Germany and Italy - by guaranteeing them four places each.
