Nobel laureate Amartya Sen asserts that the recent Lok Sabha election results reflect India's secular identity and reject the notion of a 'Hindu Rashtra.'

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's direction to her state ministers came after Visva-Bharati University sent an eviction order to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who it claimed is in possession of 1.38 acres of land on their Santiniketan campus.

Till the beginning of last month the row between the university vice-chancellor and the Nobel laureate was within some basic limits of decency. However, things changed last month when Sen in an interview acknowledged the quality of Mamata Banerjee to occupy the chair of the PM of the country. A political hullabaloo erupted over this observation of Sen, ignoring his supplementary observations on this point.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Visva Bharati University (VBU) have been involved in verbal tussle over Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen's unauthorised possession of land in Birbhum district.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Amartya Sen's house on Monday. Regarding the Nobel laureate's land dispute, she single-handedly rejected the university authorities' demands. Mamata also handed over the land documents to Amartya in the presence of the Block Land and Land Revenue Officer (BLRO).

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee met Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen at his residence and handed over land-related documents of his plot in Shantiniketan and dubbed the land-grabbing accusations made against him as "baseless".

Last week, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen asserted that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee "has the ability" to be the next prime minister of the country.

During a conversation organised by the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government on Tuesday, Sitharaman was asked by Harvard Professor Lawrence Summers that "number of people in our community", notably economist Sen has expressed rather strong reservations about the BJP government.

Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen said that the scope of discussion and disagreement in the country is getting reduced. At the same time, he claimed that people are being sent to jail after arbitrarily imposing treason charges.

Mamata Banerjee had written a letter to Sen expressing her anguish after Visva Bharati had said that Sen's family was in "illegal" possession of the land on the campus "Amartya Sen is being attacked for his views against the Union government. This is completely unacceptable. Just like, I am being attacked for my political views," she said Sen has written to Banerjee, thanking her for the support, and said her strong voice is a tremendous source of strength

 Speaking at a programme at the Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata, West Bengal, Sen on Friday said that the significance of Goddess Durga can't be compared with Ram Navami. 

The Nobel laureate also said that not tolerating people's opinion and harassing people is unacceptable. 

"Amartya Sen should remain silent. He should not react like this. He has nowadays minimum prestige and he should be conscious about that," said the BJP president.

"We must express our opposition to autocracy, we must fight against their autocratic trends, we must criticise the issues where we need to oppose the non-communal right-wing forces, but we must not take back our hands when it comes to fighting communalism which is the biggest threat," he said in Kolkata.
