Former world number one Novak Djokovic has parted company with head coach Andre Agassi after struggling to rediscover his form following a long elbow injury layoff.

If Roger Federer, 36, wins his quarterfinal of the Rotterdam Open, he will surpass Andre Agassi, who held the No 1 spot aged 33 years and 131 days. 

American Andre Agassi, eight-times grand slam champion, will continue to coach Djokovic at the grand slams with 39-year-old Stepanek stepping in at other tournaments.

"We can confirm that Agassi remains the head coach while Italian Marco Panichi will take over as the fitness coach and Argentine Ulises Badio is the new physio," Djokovic`s press office said in a statement.

This was his 17th win over the Russian. Also, this was the second time in his career that he played consecutive five-setters. Earlier was during 2017 Australian Open where he had defeated Stan Wawrinka in the semis and then Rafael Nadal in the finals, both ending in a thrilling five-set match.

Agassi was hired by Djokovic before the French Open in a bid to address his poor run of form but the Serb was badly beaten by Austrian Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

Djokovic has dropped to fourth in singles rankings after an inconsistent season and the 30-year-old's Aegon International triumph on Saturday was only his second title of the year.

Djokovic hasn't won a major since the 2016 French Open, leading him to part ways with coach Boris Becker and long-time advisor Marian Vajda.

Djokovic is playing a grasscourt warmup tournament for the first time in seven years and looked relaxed as he walked about in the south coast sunshine on Monday.

The 12-times grand slam champion parted company with his entire coaching team earlier this month after a string of disappointing results before inviting Andre Agassi to work with him during the French Open.

American eight-times grand slam champion Agassi, 47, has taken on a coaching role for the first time since ending his glittering playing career in 2006.

Djokovic on Sunday named former world number one Agassi as his coach for the French Open, which starts May 28, minutes after losing the Italian Open final to Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-3.

Agassi, who retired in 2006, won eight Grand Slam titles.

The head-to-head record between the  Swiss and the Spaniard is anything but even, with Nadal winning 23 matches out of 34.  

The Olympic gold medallist also said that Federer was arguably the greatest tennis player ever because of what he could do on any surface.

The Serbian also matched former world number one Andre Agassi`s Miami record total of six crowns on the Florida hardcourt, news.com.au reported.
