Antarctic Ice Shelf News
Due to global warming, Antarctica is constantly suffering losses. The melting of the ice sheet continues here. Now the news of breaking of a huge mountain of ice has come to light in Antarctica
Marine biologist Katrin Linse from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) will be leading the mission.
The iceberg, dubbed A68, is already shifting shape along with the remaining Larsen C ice shelf itself.
While the iceberg remains attached to the ice shelf, its outer end is moving at the highest speed ever recorded on this ice shelf.
Currently, the iceberg is attached to the shelf but is moving at rates faster than previously recorded, moving at speeds of roughly 32 feet per day.
The Antarctic ice shelf, Larsen C, was actually made up of three ice shelves named Larsen A, Larsen B and Larsen C.
For almost two years now, researchers from Project MIDAS, a British Antarctic Survey that involves teams from several UK universities, have been tracking the progress of a large rift in the Larsen C Ice Shelf.
