The release followed detailed discussions between PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake earlier on Saturday, during which the long-standing issue of fishermen's arrests was taken up.

The Sri Lankan President further said that the people of both nations have elected the current governments to ensure social protection and durable development. 

Dissanayake affirmed his administration's commitment to continue the IMF bailout programme initiated by the previous government led by Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Unveiling the full list of Cabinet ministers, Dissanayake announced Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister, who will also be the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education. 

The victory grants Dissanayake’s party a strong mandate to push forward his economic revival agenda. 

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Dissanayake, his X post had some serious message for Sri Lanka.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake  is expected to be sworn in on Monday at Colombo's Presidential Secretariat, a symbol of the country’s colonial heritage.
