Russian scientists are poring over the stunningly well-preserved bones of an adult woolly mammoth that roamed the earth at least 10,000 years ago. Local inhabitants discovered its remains in the shallows of a north Siberian lake. Part of its skull, several ribs and foreleg bones, some with soft tissue still attached to them, were retrieved from Russia`s remote Yamal peninsula above the Arctic circle.

The Arctic Policy outlined the rationale that China is likely use to ensure access to the resources of the region.

The region around the north pole "shows no sign of returning to the reliably frozen region it was decades ago," the report said.

A boatload of tourists in the far eastern Russian Arctic thought they were seeing clumps of ice on the shore, before the jaw-dropping realisation that some 200 polar bears were roaming on the mountain slope.

For the first time, NASA says the mission in its ninth year is expanding its reach to explore the Arctic’s Eurasian Basin through two research flights based out of Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the northern Atlantic Ocean.
