The Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Monday announced that 60-year-old Krishna has been elected as a Class B director, "representing the public with due but not exclusive consideration to the interests of agriculture, commerce, industry, services, labour, and consumers."

Shares of the U.S. technology firm were down nearly 3% in early trading. Whitehurst, however, will continue to work as senior adviser to Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna. The company has been restructuring since Krishna took the reins a year ago.

Krishna has replaced longtime CEO Virginia Rometty. Rometty, 62, will continue as executive chairman and serve through the end of the year when she will retire after almost 40 years with the company, IBM said in a statement on Thursday.
