The saffron party is said to be facing severe opposition from its own leaders after the party denied tickets to heavyweights in the favour of fresh faces.

Congress leader Siddaramaiah is slated to contest from the Varuna assembly constituency and the BJP is mulling the idea to field B S Yediyurappa's son B Y Vijayendra from the seat.

Mr Yediyurappa recalled that he had predicted before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections that the party would win 25 out 28 seats in Karnataka and it had come true, expressed confidence of a repeat performance.

"As elections are approaching, they have started remembering Dalits, backward classes, SCs and STs, till now nothing has been done for their welfare by this government. Now for the sake of election and votes, they are visiting areas where Dalits and backward communities live," Siddaramaiah said. 

Stating that he will continue to work towards strengthening the party, the veteran BJP leader said that his successor is free to pick his team in consultation with the party leadership.

Yediyurappa said he won't agree that there was no alternate leader to replace him in the state BJP. Speculations have been rife for some time now that efforts were on, within the ruling BJP to exert pressure for unseating Yediyurappa. There is an unwritten rule in the BJP that leaders above 75 years should not hold ministerial positions.
