Harjit Kaur, mother of notorious jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants in Batala town, Punjab, on Thursday night. Bhagwanpuria is also an accused in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.

Batala, as a city, had witnessed many pivotal moments of history in the subcontinent. Bajwa said that he had written a letter to Punjab CM Channi urging him to declare Batala as a new district.

Punjab CM has ordered a magisterial inquiry by Divisional Commissioner Jalandhar into the tragedy. On Friday, police had arrested seven bootleggers from Amritsar rural, Batala and Tarn Taran districts in over 40 raids conducted by five teams.

At least 23 people died while several others are still feared to be trapped inside a building after a massive explosion took place at a cracker factory in Punjab's Gurdaspur on Wednesday.

Several fire engines are currently at the spot carrying out the recue work to bring the situation under the control.

According to the parents of the children, they plucked green coloured fruit from a tree and ate it, following which they started vomiting and some of them fell unconscious.

The police on Tuesday arrested an ex- serviceman and his accomplice and seized arms and ammunitions, including an AK-47 assault rifle, in Batala here, an official said on Tuesday. 

In yet another shocking incident, a 70-year-old woman has accused her 45-year-old son of raping her under the influence of liquor for the last two years. 

Two persons, including a teenager, have been arrested for allegedly throwing acid on six girl students when they were returning home from school.

Six teenage girls were injured in an acid attack in Dera Baba Nanak area here on Wednesday evening after one of them spurned the advances of the assailant, police said.

“BSF handed over a suspect in Batala to us who was seen near a camp there, ascertaining more details,” said Batala SSP Daljinder Singh.

A 20-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and raped by two youths at Dhade village here.

A youth has been arrested on the charge of raping a 15-year-old girl at Jaura Singha village here.
