The BCCI may boycott the upcoming ACC Annual General Meeting scheduled in Dhaka due to political tensions and security concerns. The Asia Cup 2025 now faces uncertainty as India demands a venue change.
The BCCI’s decision to keep the Indian team from travelling to Pakistan isn’t entirely unexpected. India-Pakistan relations have been strained for years, with bilateral cricket tours suspended since 2012.
Following initial discussions, the ACC agreed to hold only one match, Pakistan vs. Nepal, in Pakistan. However, after productive negotiations between former Management Committee chairman Najam Sethi and ACC officials, Pakistan's hosting rights were expanded.
Uncertainty looms over Pakistan's involvement in these tournaments, as earlier assurances of their team's visit to India for the World Cup clash with India have been met with disappointment from the Pakistan government regarding the Asia Cup.
Now, it has been reported that they have concerns about playing in two other venues - Chennai and Bengaluru. Pakistan is set to play Australia in Bengaluru and Afghanistan in Chennai during the group stage of the World Cup 2023.
Latif further emphasized that the allocation of nine matches to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup would greatly benefit their economy, which had suffered due to political unrest.
BCCI sources to ANI denied that the hybrid model for Asia Cup 2023 was accepted by the board.
Pakistan is due to hold both Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy.
The schedule for the 2023 World Cup has yet to be officially announced, but it is widely expected that Ahmedabad will host the final.
Jay Shah, the president of the ACC, has assured Pakistan that if they rule themselves out of the event, the financial losses that broadcasters will have to bear will be compensated in a future series involving India.
BCCI also consulted with the Indian team management to determine their preferences for venues for matches, apart from the one against Pakistan.
The ACC, led by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, is yet to respond to the PCB about the proposed hybrid model.
To resolve this issue, Sethi has proposed a "hybrid model" to host the Asia Cup, where India will play its matches at an offshore venue.
Imran Khan, who served as Pakistan's Prime Minister between 2018-2022, accused the BCCI of dictating world cricket due to their financial power.
India last visited Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup, and the last bilateral series on Pakistani soil occurred in 2006.

Chopra said that India will have its way with the Asia Cup, because of the country's financial might, and the event is likely to be postponed.
BCCI will now move the Dispute Panel to recover its legal cost from the PCB, said Committee of Administrators in a statement.
