Earlier, PM Modi's visit to the UAE on January 6 was postponed due to the Omicron crisis BIMSTEC is a seven-member grouping that includes India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and Sri Lanka Sri Lanka was keen to hold the summit last year several times but it could not happen due to the Covid crisis

Sri Lanka is the chair of the grouping and had earlier proposed holding a virtual summit on 9th December which has now been postponed.

While apprising the Lower House about the upcoming BIMSTEC summit, Prime Minister Oli underscored that the summit would be fruitful to achieve sustainable development through poverty alleviation and would help to tackle the challenges of climate change and help to expand connectivity.
