Speaking at a programme marking the birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda, the DoNER and communications minister called the tribal leaders "heroes not only for the tribal community but for the entire nation."  

The British were alarmed by the growing popularity and strength of Birsa Munda and his followers. They deployed a large army to crush the rebellion, which came to be known as the Ulgulan (Great Tumult) or the Munda Rebellion. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ranchi tonight ahead of birth anniversary of Birsa Munda. PM Modi went to Jharkhand after wrapping up his poll campaign in Madhya Pradesh. Thousands of people gathered on both sides of the road in Ranchi through which PM Modi's cavalcade passed. PM Modi said that he is overwhelmed seeing the people's enthusiams even late at night. "The way a large number of my family members came to Ranchi at night and gave their blessings is overwhelming," said PM Modi.

Birsa Munda is a legendary tribal leader. He fought for the right of indigenous people against Britishers and money lenders. He died on June 9, 1900 at the young age of 25 after giving a tough fight to Britishers.

“Today India is celebrating its 1st 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas'. For the 1st time after independence, art, culture of tribal society & their contribution towards freedom struggle and nation-building is being proudly remembered & honoured,” said PM Modi. 

“Nation decided that during 'amrit kaal' of independence, tribal traditions and its tales of gallantry will be given even more grand identity. The historic decision has been taken that November 15 - the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda - will be celebrated as 'Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas'” the PM said in his inaugural speech.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to tribal leader Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary on Sunday. Praising the freedom fighter, PM Modi said his contribution to the freedom movement and social harmony will always inspire the countrymen. PM Modi also greeted people of Jharkhand on its foundation day and wished them happiness, prosperity and good health.

Birsa Munda is also known to have also laid the foundation of a new religion, which believed in one God.
