In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in the cases related to deposits made in unreported foreign bank accounts in HSBC, undisclosed income of more than Rs 8,468 crore have been brought to tax and penalty of over Rs 1,294 crore has been levied.

It was alleged that the 100 shell companies used by the accused for routing and diversion of bank funds had no genuine business transactions.

When the House met for the day, opposition members demanded an obituary reference for the Army personnel killed in Tuesday`s attack in Nagrota, in Jammu and Kashmir.

Two pistols, live cartridges, one vehicle, five bank accounts in which money was to be deposited, seven mobile phones were also seized.  

The inmates, undergoing rigorous imprisonment for life, in their petition submitted that it became a problem for the prisoners, confined in jail, to deposit cash in hand of more than Rs 50,000 in demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.

A local was unable to produce valid documents to explain the cash and jewellery he possessed and he was being interrogated to ascertain source of the money.
