As many as 76 districts in India do not have licensed blood banks. This was revealed by Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey in a written reply to Rajya Sabha recently.

Lack of coordination between blood banks and hospitals has resulted in wastage of blood, including red blood cells and plasma as the life-saving components could not be used before their expiry date, says the report.

India has a total of 2,760 licensed blood banks, with the state of Tamil Nadu, at 304, possessing the highest number, according to the National Health Profile data released here by the health ministry.
