Boko Haram fighters battled Nigerian soldiers for about an hour as they tried to take over a military base, in the latest attack against troops in the restive northeast.

Residents in Nigeria's northern Borno state say attacks by Boko Haram extremists on several villages in the past week have killed at least 27 people.

The Nigerian Army on Thursday said that 68 Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered in Borno in last three weeks.

The blasts struck four areas in the city, which is the capital of Borno, the state worst affected by the eight-year-old insurgency by Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

Among the wounded are Nigerians working for Doctors Without Borders and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Suicide bombers in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, the heart of a seven-year-old insurgency by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, killed two people, the state police commissioner said on Friday.

Doctors crowded around Abdullahi. One squeezed a drip and another prepared a plastic syringe. The young boy didn`t move. Only the shallow rise and fall of his chest indicated he was still alive.

The bombs, suspected to have been planted in the mosque, went off twice as worshipers arrived for prayer in Sulemanti ward.

Nigeria`s military on Wednesday said troops had rescued 241 women and children during operations against Boko Haram Islamist militants in the country`s restive northeast.

At least 54 people were killed and 90 wounded in multiple bomb attacks in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Sunday evening, a police spokesman said on Monday.
