Bulgaria`s centre-right Prime Minister Boyko Borisov stepped down Sunday after his presidential nominee suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of a Moscow-friendly general backed by the Socialist opposition.

Bulgaria risked plunging into fresh political turmoil today after a Moscow-friendly general backed by the Socialist opposition won the presidential run-off, beating the handpicked nominee of centre-right Prime Minister Boyko Borisov by a whopping margin.

Bulgaria switched on Wednesday its support from UNESCO chief Irina Bokova to European Commission Vice President Kristalina Georgieva as its candidate for UN secretary-general, potentially shaking up the race.

Founded by former president Georgy Parvanov, the party has 11 deputies, which guaranteed Borisov a narrow majority of 125 within the 240-seat parliament.

Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia pledged on Saturday to seek a Europe-wide solution to the migrant crisis but warned they would close their borders if other EU countries stopped taking new arrivals.

 Bulgaria`s Orthodox Church has called on its government not to let any more Muslim refugees into the country to prevent an "invasion".
