After China had announced its plans to build a mega dam on the Brahmaputra River, India voiced its concerns with Beijing last year, including “the need for transparency and consultation” with the nations that lie downstream.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, attended the groundbreaking ceremony and announced the official start of the Yarlung Zangbo River Lower Reaches Hydropower Project in the Tibet region.

India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty following the Pakistan-backed Pahalgam terror attack. Since then, Pakistanis have been raising the Brahmaputra river issue.

The dam will be built at a huge gorge in the Himalayan reaches where the Brahmaputra River makes a huge U-turn to flow into Arunachal Pradesh and then to Bangladesh.

Following setbacks at the border, China is now reportedly preparing a massive hydropower project that could potentially bring devastating floods to India. 

The flood situation in Assam has turned more critical as over 11.34 lakh people in 28 districts have been affected.  

The water level of the Brahmaputra River has been rising due to heavy rainfall in many parts of Assam and neighbouring states in the past couple of days. According to ANI reports, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reposted that nearly 1.34 lakh people including 33760 children of 7 districts of the state - Kamrup, Karimganj, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Cachar, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, have affected in the deluge. IMD has issued a red alert for coming one days.    

Following the torrential rains, the water level of the Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger level mark at Neamatighat in Jorhat district and at Dhubri, Manas River at Nh Road Crossing, Pagladiya River at Nt Road Crossing, Puthimari river at Nh Road Crossing.

An IWT official said more than 120 passengers were on board the boat but many of them were rescued by lifeguards on 'Tripkai'. Three senior officials of IWT Department were suspended on the charge of negligence of duty in connection with the accident, an official statement said.

The capsized boat was also carrying several four-wheelers and two-wheelers that went down the river. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed concern over the incident. NDRF and SDRF have commenced a search and rescue operation.

Golaghat is the worst-hit district with 63,984 people suffering, followed by Darrang and Morigaon. 42 revenue circles and 863 villages remained affected, while 23,884 hectares of crop have also been damaged, as per ASDMA bulletin.

950 villages in 21 districts of the state have been affected due to floods following heavy rainfall in the state. CWC has warned that the water level in Brahmaputra river is expected to rise by 20 to 35 centimetres. SDRF, Circle Office, Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) and local administration are involved in the rescue operations.

India’s neighbour, China is planning to harness the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra river, commonly known as Yarlung Tsangpo in China. Number of projects listed under China’s new five-year plan are going to be built very close to the border of the two nations.

India intends to remain engaged with China on the issue of trans-border rivers to safeguard the interest of the nation. The Brahmaputra River is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in China.

China is planning to build a major hydropower project in Tibet’s part of the Brahmaputra River. China is planning to build the dam as part of the proposal for the country's 14th Five-Year Plan. Chinese government has already finalised a company to construct this dam.

The overflowing Brahmaputra River, which flows through China's Tibet, India and Bangladesh, has damaged crops and triggered mudslides, displacing millions of people, officials said.

Heavy rains have created havoc across several districts across the state. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority on Tuesday informed that a total of 99 villages have been affected by floods caused by incessant rainfall across four districts.
