Opposition National Conference on Saturday held a protest rally here against the Jammu and Kashmir government's "failure" in nabbing the culprits behind the alleged braid chopping incidents in the state.

A mentally-challenged man was mercilessly thrashed by a violent mob in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore on suspicion of being a braid chopper. 

Four persons were injured today when security forces fired on a mob in Pahalgam area of Jammu and Kashmir following an alleged braid chopping incident, police said.

A protest against the rising braid chopping incidents in Kashmir on Wednesday turned violent in Batamaloo area of the city as protestors pelted stones on law enforcing agencies, the police said.

Several incidents of braid chopping have been reported in Kashmir, leaving the Valley on edge.

Panic over the hair of women allegedly being chopped off in the Valley led to the death of a septuagenarian last night after a young man hit him with a stone under the impression he was the one behind the mysterious incidents.

"These restrictions have been imposed to maintain law and order in the city," police said.

Police, investigating the braid-chopping incidents, fear that it could incite violence and anti-India protests
