Earthquake tremors have been felt in Northern California. The intensity of the earthquake has been measured at 6.4 on the Richter scale.
The powerful magnitude 6.4 earthquake which jolted the northern coast of California was followed by about 80 aftershocks.
The National Weather Service in Greenville said the 5.1-magnitude temblor struck at 8:07 am., following a much smaller quake several hours earlier.
It was the largest earthquake to hit the state since 1916, when a magnitude 5.5 quake occurred near Skyland, the weather service said.
The tremors, which were felt as far as Los Angeles, was quickly followed by several smaller aftershocks in the area.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck Mexico near the coast of Oaxaca on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
