Streets were flooded in some residential parts of the island of Barbados, which had been experiencing heavy rain since Sunday as the storm approached.

The death toll from Hurricane Irma was at 82 early on Friday as 1.5 million homes and businesses in Florida remained without power in sweltering heat, five days after the historic storm ripped through southeast U.S. 

The islands could expect winds that could reach 120 kilometres per hour, up to 100 millimetres of rain and waves of between six to eight metres, forecasters said.

Hurricane Irma made landfall as a maximum-strength Category Five storm late Friday, US forecasters said, after leaving a trail of death and destruction on a string of Caribbean islands.

112 were people were injured.

The most powerful category 5 Hurricane Irma has killed at least 10 people across a number of Carribean islands, according to the Independent.
