Before Root, the Pakistani duo of Javed Miandad (145 in 1989) and Inzamam-ul-haq (184 in 2005) were the only two batsmen to score a ton in 100th Test against the Indian attack.
Root completed his century with a single off Washington Sundar off 162 balls in a knock studded with 12 boundaries.
It's his 10th Test hundred in 52 matches, and fourth in ten innings. He scored 126 at Rajkot, 136 at Mumbai – both against England last November. In February, he scored 108 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad.
He had earlier hit 124 not out off 145 balls, slamming 16 fours and two sixes, in the third ODI of the series. This in fact is the third occasion that Rohit has got two centuries as an ODI opener in a bilateral series. He had achieved the same feat versus Australia in 2013 and 2016.
