Chris Cairns faces a long road to recovery after he suffered an aortic dissection, a major medical event which saw him transferred to Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital on life support earlier this month.
Cairns, 51, had undergone several operations after suffering an aortic dissection but had not responded to treatment as hoped, Newshub reported. An aortic dissection is a tear in the body's main artery.
The 31-year-old cricketer achieved the distinction in 54 Test matches in comparison to Botham who took 55 innings in order to accumulate 3000 runs, 200 wickets in Tests.

McCullum was non-committal about whether he would testify against Cairns again.

Cairns was last week found not guilty of perjury at Southwark Crown Court.
A London court on Monday cleared Cairns of perjury.
McCullum was one of two former team mates, along with self-confessed matchfixer Lou Vincent, who gave key evidence against Cairns in the trial.
With today's verdict, Cairns was cleared of all charges at Southwark Crown Court.
Cairns faces a charge of perjury after successfully suing Lalit Modi for accusing him of match-fixing.
