The one-day strike was initially called by the four central trade unions.
Ahead of the CIL workers' proposed nation-wide stir on Friday, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said healthy conversations are the way forward and the government is always open to discussions.
State miner Coal India Ltd. has near-monopoly over production in the country, supplying nearly 82 percent of domestic output.
"After a meeting with the joint secretary of Coal Ministry and coal trade unions, we have agreed to defer the proposed strike," INTUC leader S Q Zama said.
The sale could fetch a third of the government`s $9.5 billion annual divestment target.
As discussions with Coal India management did not make much headway Wednesday, the workers' unions has decided to go ahead with proposed one-day strike on November 24, four trade unions said in a joint statement.
More than half of India`s thermal power plants, which source most of their coal from state behemoth Coal India, have stocks enough to last for only less than a week.
