Catalan separatists won a crucial snap poll Thursday, plunging their region into further uncertainty after a failed independence bid rattled Europe and triggered Spain's worst political crisis in decades.

It is the first time that a candidate for prime minister has lost both confidence votes since Spain returned to democracy following the death of longtime dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975.

Spain`s Socialists, racing to try and form a minority coalition government following inconclusive elections, on Wednesday got their first pledge of support after signing a deal with centrist party Ciudadanos.
