President-elect Donald Trump will not push for further investigation of Hillary Clinton related to her private email use and the Clinton Foundation, a close adviser said Tuesday, breaking with a key campaign theme.

A top aide to President-elect Donald Trump today refused to rule out prosecuting Democrat Hillary Clinton or investigating the foundation run by former president Bill Clinton.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Tuesday said if she wins on November 8, her husband, former President Bill Clinton, should not have to resign from the Clinton Foundation, an organisation mired in controversy over donations received while she was the Secretary of State.

"I am sure, and I am sure because I have a very strong foundation of understanding about the foundation" and the good work it has done,” the Democratic candidate said in an interview.

Donald Trump on Tuesday stepped up his attacks on Hillary Clinton, accusing her of "Third World"-style corruption over her family`s charitable foundation and calling her unfit to hold office.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton "is the defender of the corrupt and rigged status quo", declared Trump in a communique released by his campaign.

"The Clintons have spent decades as insiders lining their own pockets and taking care of donors instead of the American people," the Republican presidential candidate said in a statement.
