As of October 2024, the state's cotton cultivation area expanded to 26.8 lakh hectares, marking an increase of 9 lakh hectares over the past two decades.
Cotton production in India is estimated to be lower by 11 percent at 335 lakh bales in the current year due to lower acreage and drastic reduction in yields, says a report.
With domestic trade estimating cotton production at around 400 lakh bales, India is expected to emerge as the largest cotton producer in the world in 2015-16.
Even if cotton production declines by up to 15 percent next season, the adequate domestic stock position is likely to keep the prices stable during cotton year (CY) 2015-16, according to rating agency ICRA.
Cotton is grown in about two lakh hectare of cultivation area here out of a total of 4.75 lakh hectares, she said.
Considering this, SISPA wants VAT to be reduced to two percent on cotton, cotton yarn, blended and synthetic yarns to safeguard the spinning industry in the state and save the livelihood of lakhs of workers in textile industry, he said.
