With billions of rupees expected to be exchanged during the Mahakumbh, authorities are investigating whether the counterfeit currency operation was aimed at infiltrating the event's financial activities. 

The incident took place at the Jamia Habibiya Madrasa located in the Atarsuiya area of Prayagraj. According to the police, counterfeit notes worth Rs 45,000 were being exchanged for Rs 15,000 in genuine currency. 

The supplementary charge sheet was filed before a special court in Mumbai on Wednesday against four people, including the designated terrorist 'Uncle' alias Javed Patel alias Javed Chikna in the Thane fake currency case.

The founder of ArthaKranti, Pune-based think tank, AnilBokil has claimed on Sunday that post note ban there is no fake currency in circulation in system. The organisation claims to have suggested demonetisation to the government.

Worried about "fake new notes" of Rs 2,000, Rs 500 denominations in the market? 

The Reserve Bank on Thursday said it has withdrawn the instructions on compensation to banks at 25 per cent of the notional value of counterfeit notes detected.

The banking system detected over 2.52 lakh pieces of counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination in FY14 as against the 2.81 lakh the year before.
