India, which has already been hit hard by the COVID-19 delta variant, has named the related new variant the "Delta Plus" - the "variant of concern". But, some epidemiologists in India and abroad say there is not enough data to give a comprehensive warning about this variant.

The first death linked to the Delta Plus variant of COVID-19 has been reported in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday (June 23, 2021).
There were a total of five confirmed cases in the state, out of which three were reported from Bhopal and the remaining from Ujjain.

The ICMR and NIV will conduct a study to test the efficacy of coronavirus vaccines against the new Delta variant.
The study is likely to involve Covaxin and Covishield vaccines.
