The National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) on Friday approved Serum Institute of India's Covid-19 vaccine Covovax for the 12-17 age group, as per ANI.
Covovax was approved by India's drug regulator for restricted use in emergency situations in adults on December 28.
India began inoculating children aged 12-14 from March 16.
Biological E's Corbevax is being used to inoculate them.
The vaccine has not been included in the country's inoculation programme against Covid-19
Covovax is manufactured by technology transfer from Novavax and is approved by European Medicines Agency for conditional marketing authorisation
Many countries have been administering booster doses to their citizens, considering the uncertainties of the pandemic.
According to an official statement released by Novovax, the vaccine, also known as NVX-CoV2373, is manufactured and marketed in India by the Serum Institute of India (SII) under the brand name Covovax and is the first protein-based vaccine authorized for use in this age group in India.
"Novavax in global trials has demonstrated more than 90 per cent efficacy. Serum Institute of India`s brand Covovax has completed bridging studies in India and has been granted Emergency Use Authorisation by DCGI for adults and for children above the age of 12. Younger age groups will follow shortly," SII CEO Adar Poonawala said in a tweet.

Six COVID-19 vaccines - Serum Institute's Covishield, Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, Zydus Cadila's ZyCoV-D, Russia's Sputnik V and the US-made Moderna and Johnson and Johnson - had already received EUA from the Indian drug regulator earlier.
The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has issued Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Covovax to prevent COVID-19 for adults 18 years old and above.
2 vaccines and 1 drug related to corona have been approved. The Corbevax and Covovax vaccines have been approved.
Molnupiravir, an anti-viral drug, has also been approved for restricted use in an emergency situation.
The DCGI office had granted SII permission to manufacture and stock Covovax on May 17

The Serum Institute of India (SII) had put in an application to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) in October for grant of market authorisation of Covovax for restricted use in emergency situations.
"Pune`s Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College Hospital began phase 2/3 trials of Covovax in children between 7 and 11 years of age on Wednesday. Nine children have been enrolled for the trial here," said Dr Sanjay Lalwani.
Serum Institute of India has filed for WHO emergency use listing for its upcoming COVID vaccine Covovax.
The WHO has accepted the application of the Pune-based pharmaceutical company.
A pre-submission meeting was also held on August 10.
Poonawala said he is hopeful that for adults Covovax will be launched in October, depending on DCGI approvals.
It will be a two-dose vaccine and the price will be decided at the time of launch, he added.
Poonawalla met Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament and the meeting between the two lasted for 30 minutes.
