Chasing 160 to win, the Patriots were off to worst possible start with Chris Gayle dismissed by Roston Chase for a duck. Wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva (37) and Rutherford (25) steadied the innings with a 45-run stand for the third wicket.
Chris Gayle was in destructive form, scoring 42 from 27 balls, and after he fell to youngster Kevin Sinclair, it was Evin Lewis who took responsibility to lead the chase.
Russell came out to bat in the 18th over of the innings, and yet he went onto score a stunning fifty as he started smashing bowlers all over the park from the word go. His 14-ball 50 included six sixes and three fours as he played with a strike rate of 357.14.
While earlier, the CPL was scheduled to commence on August 28 and end on September 19, it will now be played at St Kitts and Nevis between August 26 and September 15.
