Davinder Singh Kang News
Top Indian javelin thrower Davinder Singh Kang has been suspended provisionally by the world athletics governing body after he returned positive for a steroid in an out-of-competition test last week.
Kang, who became the first Indian javelin thrower to reach the final round of a World Championships last week in London, returned positive for marijuana in an in-competition test conducted by NADA during the Indian Grand Prix in May 15.
Kang, the first Indian to qualify for a world championship final round in javelin throw, produced a below- par performance and could only muster a best throw of 80.02m in his third attempt at the Olympic Stadium.
If Kang manages to beat the odds and win a medal tomorrow night, he will become only the second Indian to do so after Anju Bobby George, who won bronze medal in women's long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Paris.
Competing in the qualification round Group B yesterday, Kang, who was carrying a shoulder injury, cleared the automatic qualification mark of 83m in his third and final throw as he sent the iron spear to a distance of 84.22m. He had a 82.22m in his opening throw and then came up with 82.14m in his second.
The 19-year-old world junior record holder has an outside chance of clinching a medal and he will feature in the qualification round tomorrow.
