Preeti Pal made history as the first Indian female track athlete to win two Paralympic medals, securing bronze in the 200m T35 category at the Paris Paralympics. Her inspiring journey overcame physical challenges, financial constraints, and rigorous training.

Deepa Malik said that she is delighted to be the voice of the next MG SUV. The athlete pointed out that the carmaker is contributing to the empowerment of different sections of society. MG Motors is expected to launch the SUV at a price point of Rs 12 lakh.

Paralympic javelin thrower Deepa has bagged a total of 58 national and 23 international medal during her illustrious career.

While Malik took the award, Punia had to skip the awards ceremony as he is training in Russia for the upcoming World championships.

Khel Ratna is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four year.

The government on Saturday decided to recommend Deepa's name for the Khel Ratna award. 

The 12-member committee, which met in New Delhi on Friday and Saturday to select the recommendations, included Mary Kom, Bhaichung Bhutia, Anju Bobby George, Anjum Chopra and Kamlesh Mehta, besides those nominated by the Sports Ministry.

Giving an example of her three releases this year, Sonakshi said "Khandaani Shafakhana", "Mission Mangal" and "Dabangg 3" will all give her a chance to showcase versatility.

At the event in New Delhi on Wednesday, Rajya Sabha MP Dr Subhash Chandra expressed his happiness at women sportspersons basking in the limelight.

The Khel Ratna was awarded to two-time Paralympic gold medallist, Devendra Jhajharia, and former India hockey captain Sardar Singh in August.

The award selection panel, earlier this month, had announced the list of recommendation for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Award. Rio Paralympics gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia and former Indian hockey team captain Sardar Singh – were on the list for Khel Ratna award in the country; while Cheteshwar Pujara, Harmanpreet Kaur along with 17 others were on the list for the Arjuna award.

A few weeks earlier, the award selection panel had announced the names of Javelin thrower and a Rio medallist Devendra Jhajharia and former Indian Hockey team captain Sardar Singh for the Khel Ratna award. However, the 47-year-old, who had scripted history at Rio to become the first Indian female athlete to win a silver at the Paralympics, wasn't on the list. 

"Giving them opportunities and freedom is important. Growth of a nation can be measured by how its women and differently-abled people are treated."

The focus of this year's Padma awards, according to the officials in the Home Ministry, was on recognising talent of unknown and unsung heroes of the country.

Deepa, who won a silver in the shot put F53 event in Rio in September, is the first Indian woman para-athlete to win a medal at the Paralympics.

Paralympian Deepa Malik recently was awarded the Dr Batra's 'Positive Health Heroes' title and it was given to her by Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha. The silver medallist took to Twitter and shared her happiness over getting the award and meeting Sona baby.

The 46-year-old became the first Indian woman Paralympic medallist when she clinched silver at the Rio Games.
